Listening to Home Readers DVD +++ BESTSELLER

Kirstie Wilson B.Ed (Primary), M.Ed. (Spec. Ed.)

Kirstie uses real life examples to show key reading skills and how to cope with problems parents  encounter when listening to their child read.

The program is in three parts:

  • General Guidelines (e.g. reading time, a good time and place)
  • Three Crucial Reading Skills: 1- Reading the Print, 2 - Reading for Meaning and 3 - Self Correcting
  • How to deal with common problems (e.g. what to do with mistakes, and how to deal with tiredness)

There is still much controversy over the best way to teach children to read. Kirstie uses a balanced approach, taking the best from both methods. She has found that sounding out words for most     children is an essential skill, and that many children in her remedial reading classes can be helped enormously by strengthening their understanding between letters and sounds.

Knowing what to do when a child makes a mistake is often very difficult for parents. There are no "one-size-fits-all" rules here, so Kirstie shows several techniques that can be used, depending on the situation.
